Guest Author: Layne Macadam

I'm very happy Layne Macadam could drop by today and have a chat. Welcome to my blog, Layne!

Interview Questions

Thank you so much for having me today, Christy.

Do you write in different genres?
Yes, I sure do. I write suspense, sci-fi, paranormal, and contemporary. Wolf on Wheels is the first book in my wolf shifter Heritage Series. Book 2 has some unexpected surprises.
Which is your favorite genre to write?
I like to stretch my imagination, but if I had to choose one, I’d say contemporary. Desire Unleashed is a contemporary suspense, and because it was my first published novel, it holds a special place in my heart. Desire Denied, Book 2 in the Desire Series was released April 6 and I’m currently working on Book 3.
How did you come up with the title for Wolf On Wheels?
Well, it was originally called Lara’s Wolf. It was the first thing that came to mind to save the file under. I never really warmed to it, though. The hero Caleb rides a motorbike, and I was trying to incorporate that into the title.
Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?
A bit of both, really. All the books in the Desire Series had their titles before they were written. Obsession Down Under was originally called The Perfect Rose, and Star Crossed Lovers started out as Super Nova Princess. I try and title the books to reflect what’s inside and sometimes I don’t know that until the story is complete!
Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true-life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?
I wish! Who wouldn’t love a gorgeous bike riding wolf shifter in their life? But alas, no, it’s purely fiction, although I do draw on my travel experiences for location at times.
What book are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Book 7 in the Outlander Series by Dianna Gabaldon. I love series because you get to know not only the main characters in detail but also the secondary characters. They kind of become like your family.
What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?
I’m actually working on two books. Desire Rekindled, the third book in the Desire Series, and the second book in the Heritage Series as yet untitled. When I hit a brick wall with one, I put it aside and work on the other.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Sure I would love to. The following snippet is from Book 2 in the Heritage Series, as I said before, I’m yet to come up with a title!!

Camille Robineau darted between the trees as if her tail was on fire; the wind tousling her fur, and her feet kicking up clods of damp earth. Cody was in hot pursuit. Not that he would catch her. She could always outrun her twin even from when they were cubs. But this time—he was livid.
Thoughts of his anger increased her speed, and the wind amplified right along with it. The velocity had picked up and it howled with menace. The farther she ascended Mt Robson the colder it grew, and a shiver ran through her. If Cody didn’t back off soon, she’d have to spend the night. That prospect held no joy. As a rule she loved sleeping in the open, but she was hungry, having missed lunch, and in no mood to hunt. She paused on a rocky outcrop and lifting her muzzle, looked up at a leaden sky. Heavy bellied gray clouds sagged on the treetops, and the clusters of birds huddled on the lower branches were an omen. Damn it, snow was in the air.

“Can I be of assistance?” he asked stepping off the machine, his lips curving upward and his grin broadening as he flashed his pearly whites.

“Ah thanks, I’m not sure what’s wrong. Betty complains a lot, but she’s never let me down.”

“Betty?”
“My car. I have this terrible habit of naming everything.” She giggled. Her laughter was a deep throaty chuckle that slid over his skin in a smooth

caress. It was an infectious sound, and he joined in remembering how she’d given names to Nora, and him.

“It suits her,” he said opening the door for her to step out.

Her smile widened at his gesture, and her green eyes twinkled with flecks of gold. She was a vision of loveliness. His heart constricted, and his body tensed at her nearness. It was a confronting feeling, but not one he disliked.

She glanced around him her eyes settling on the bike parked near the car. “I love your bike. Nicer than a Harley, in my humble opinion.”

“Thanks, yeah it is kind of cool.” It was also cool they had something human in common. The bike was a CTG 1200 with tall chrome handlebars and chrome muffler. The petrol tank was black with the CTG logo, a wolf’s face, red eyed with lips drawn back and teeth bared. His grandsire, Cyrus Thomas Grayson, started the company, and the family had been manufacturing bikes ever since. Over the last couple of decades the brand had elevated to a status similar to that of Harley Davidson. So much so there were only two types of true bikers, the Harley type, or the CTG type, and he was gratified she was the latter.

“Forgive me for asking, but did you remember to fill up?” It went against the grain to deceive her, but he was in a quandary. He had to meet her somehow and this was the best he could come up with on such short notice.

“Um, yes two days ago, but I’ve only been on short trips, so it couldn’t be that.”

Caleb took off his jacket. He wore it for effect not warmth, and to avoid awkward questions. His kind was immune to the elements. “Pop the hood and I’ll take

a look. I’m Caleb by the way. Caleb Grayson.”
“Lara Walker. Pleased to meet you.”
When she pushed her hand into his, a buzz shot up his arm and along his

veins. He almost howled with joy it felt so damn good. Her skin was silky and her scent alluring. When he released her fingers, his inner wolf wanted to pounce, bite her, mark her as his own, but he talked him down.

“Are you a local?” Her sexy voice sounded so good to his ears.
“Yep, I live farther up the mountain.”
Her arched brows drew together. “Tell me Caleb, do you ever see any

wolves?”
Her question was unexpected, and it made him grin. “Yeah, all the time.” Her index finger tapped against her bottom lip. “Hmm.”
She didn’t elaborate as she popped the release mechanism. He lifted the hood

and tinkered, feeling a fraud. “Any clues?”

“All looks fine here. Do you mind if I try and turn it over?”
Ginger curls swished from side to side as she shook her head. “Be my guest.” Caleb climbed into the driver’s seat and turned the key. The car tried to click

over but sputtered. He tried again with the same result.
“Out of fuel would be my guess, Lara.” He liked the way her name rolled off

his tongue. He liked what else he was going to do to her with his tongue.
“Oh blast, my fuel gauge has been playing up the last few months but I was

sure I had plenty of gas left.”
When her brow crinkled again he inhaled sharply. “It happens to the best of

us. Tell you what though, how about I run you down to the gas station at the foot of the mountain? We can fill a can, and I’ll have you back here and on the road in no time.”

She didn’t answer right away, which was good, at least she hadn’t rejected the idea straight up. Her gaze flicked toward the direction they’d come from. The emotions that crossed her face were easy to read as she weighed her options.

While he waited for her response his acute hearing detected the sound of an approaching vehicle. He wanted her answer before it reached them so gave her a prompt.

“I’ll be a proper gentleman, scouts honor.” His left hand went over his heart, and with his right, thumb holding little finger down, gave the traditional scout salute.

She dragged her eyes back and focused on his ink. Her message was clear. Could someone like him be trusted? A biker? His Wolf tattoo loomed large on his upper arm, and dressed as he was in low slung ripped denims and a tank top, with his black hair pulled back in a ponytail showing the large birthmark on his neck, he guessed he didn’t look the gentlemanly type. And although he’d always been disdainful of her kind, he ached for her to come to him of her own accord. There’d be no coercion, but she did need time to get to know him, love him, and he needed time to know her, love her.

They both turned as the sleek black Porsche pulled off the road and stopped beside them.

“I didn’t get very far,” Lara announced as the human male he recognized from before got out of the car.

“Yes, I can see that. Sorry I was so long, couldn’t escape.” Joe pulled a face and shrugged.

“Understandable, Molly loves a chat. Joe, this is Caleb, he lives farther up the

mountain and stopped to give me a hand. Joe and I just met at my sister’s earlier today,” she explained.

When Joe, stuck out his hand in the traditional human greeting, he wanted to crush it. He could smell the other man’s lust, and it enraged his inner wolf. Caleb’s silver-gray eyes flickered and narrowed, and the hairs on the back of his neck thickened and stood on end. “Calm yourself,” he instructed his inner wolf.

“He wants our mate. I will rip out his throat before I allow that to happen.” “Trust me, it won’t happen, but we can’t rush this—humans are not like us.” “Be warned, I will not wait forever.”
When his inner wolf retreated, Caleb shook the other man’s hand.

*

“I feel such a dork. Seems I ran out of gas.” Lara forced a smile as she made the explanation. When Joe’s Porsche pulled into the lay-by, rather than excitement at seeing him again it was disappointment she felt. She’d really wanted to throw her leg over the CTG and ride behind Caleb, and now felt robbed.

“Nonsense, it happens, and sometimes these old cars can be unpredictable. How about I drive you to the gas station, pick up enough fuel to get Betty moving, and then follow you back down.”

Her gaze swung from the well-dressed clean-cut graphic designer to the longhaired tattooed bad-boy biker. Both men were sexy and drop dead gorgeous, but it was on the biker that her gaze lingered. When he’d made the same offer earlier she’d been ready to accept. Even now, uncharacteristic lustful visions of her jumping onto the saddle behind him, gripping his hips and pressing her body hard up against his butt, his back, his thighs, entered her usually rational mind.

“So, what do you say?”

When Joe spoke, the image in her head disappeared like a puff of smoke in the wind, and she almost groaned at the loss.

“My offer still stands, you choose.” Caleb’s voice was upbeat, and when his lips pulled back into an engaging smile, her heart gave a little kick.

She ached to turn her vision into a reality, to feel the excitement of the wind in her face and him in her arms as they weaved down the mountain at speed, but it was her sensible inner voice that won out.

“Caleb, I can’t thank you enough for your help and your offer, but—” “Don’t sweat it. I get it—sensible choice.” The smile slid off his face.

Fun With Memes

With the release of Shift Happens, my inner "fun girl" returned and I had a blast creating promotional teasers for my new release. Shift Happens is a humorous tale, so it was only fitting the teasers were equally funny.

Check out my collection below and tell me which is your favorite!

COVER REVEAL: In Deeper - Tybee Island Shifters 2

I'm excited to share the brand new cover for In Deeper, book 2 in the Tybee Islands Shifters series. In Deeper will be available Friday, 12/26/14. The story of the Randolphs continue and this time it's Micah - bad boy twin - and Celeste, the beta and workaholic who used to date Drake Randolph. Sparks fly in this one!

Blurb:

Celeste Proctor has always had the best of everything…expensive homes, fashionable clothing, and the coveted position of beta to the most powerful of all lycans, Drake Randolph. But after the alpha chooses a bride, she’s left with the unenviable situation of choosing another wolf to pin her sights on. She needs a mate – the stronger, the better – to help maintain her carefully cultivated image. One of Drake’s brothers will have to do, but which one?

Micah Randolph has always been cast in the shadow of his oldest brother. With his country music career heating up, Micah is looking forward to a whirlwind tour and finally having success on his own, separate from his position within the powerful Randolph family. But when the beautiful yet untouchable Celeste Proctor shows up, determined to mate with him or his twin brother, he has a choice to make. Will his pride allow him to take what he’s always wanted? Or will he risk it all to make her admit she wants him for more than just his strong lycan blood?

Excerpt:

Applause echoed through the packed arena, reverberating off the concrete flooring and resonating to the domed ceiling. Micah Randolph slung his guitar behind his back and waved at the fans who’d come to see the kickoff of his and Max’s summer tour. The concert had sold out due to their new single topping the country charts. The energy of the crowd and intense stage lighting made the temperature soar.
Beads of sweat formed on his forehead, and Micah lifted the hem of his T-shirt to swipe at his face. Another round of thunderous applause started. He smoothed his shirt back over his abs and shot a grin to the girls in the front row.
Max, the other half of the band’s duo, unplugged his guitar from the amp and strode over to smack his palm in the center of his stomach. “Tired of being a sex object yet?” his slightly younger brother asked with a smirk.
“You tell me,” Micah shot back. His brother experienced no lack in the female attention department either, despite his attempts to stay out of the spotlight.
“It’s you they come to see,” Max remarked. He waved to the crowd, and the cheers increased. “Not me.”
Micah arched an eyebrow. “Really?”
“Shut it.” Max gave him a quick nod. “Good show.”
As one, they turned to take a bow. They exited the stage to the pounding of drums and an electric light show to rival any of the big-name country artists. The production was nothing like the small gigs they’d done in Nashville, playing their hearts out for the small crowds at Deanie’s. Backstage, the crew gathered around the brothers and handed each an ice-cold beer. Micah took a deep draw from his bottle before raising it in a mock toast. “To my brother for writing kick-ass songs.”
Max, ever the unassuming one, shoved his elbow into Micah’s gut and grunted. “I’ll see you back at the hotel. Drake and Emma are waiting for us.”
Micah’s good mood evaporated. He’d forgotten his oldest brother and new wife were coming to Atlanta for the first show. Although he loved his family, he’d been in the mood to celebrate. Something Drake, stern alpha that he was, didn’t appreciate. Since his marriage to Emma, Drake had become softer but not soft enough to allow his younger twin brothers to party it up all night at a club.
Micah drained the bottle and tossed it into a nearby trash can. Another crew member pressed a second bottle into his hand. He unscrewed the cap and drank half of it on the way to his dressing room. Thank God no press functions were planned for the night. He and Max had been on the media circuit for weeks, gearing up for their first headlining tour. With the success of their latest single, they’d garnered the music industry’s attention, and all the major networks sought an interview.
He shifted the bottle of beer to his left hand and turned the knob to his dressing room. The scent of flowers assaulted him. Roses permeated the entire room, not something he’d expected to find in the space he’d left just ninety minutes ago. He recognized the scent in an instant.
It betrayed the familiar female standing before the dressing table even before he locked eyes with her.
Celeste.
Gorgeous as ever. A tall, willowy blonde with perfect teeth and perfect hair. Unattainable. The one woman he’d always wanted but could never have. Despite Drake finding a mate, Celeste was still off-limits to Micah.
“Celeste.” He placed the bottle on a table near the door and carefully shut the door behind him. “What are you doing here?”
Celeste shoved aside the items littering the top of the vanity and placed her delectable ass on the counter. She swayed long legs, encased in tight leather, back and forth. “Hello, Micah.”
He ignored the greeting and strode forward. The closer he came to her, the angrier he got. How dare she come here? He’d said everything he’d had to say to her at Drake’s wedding. “I repeat. What are you doing here? Did Drake invite you?”
She cocked her head to one side. One long, loose curl fell over her shoulder to coil around a full breast pushing against the lacy corset she wore. “Drake doesn’t know I’m here.”
Despite his anger, the attraction was undeniable. Celeste, with her fucking million-dollar smile and tight-ass body, drove him insane. He sneered at her, struggling to keep lust from clouding his judgment. He’d given into it once. Damned if he’d do it again.
“You’ve always been such a good little beta. Are you sure you want to risk Drake’s anger by coming here and fucking around with me?”
His cruel words hit their mark. Her lips turned down at the corners seconds before her eyes glowed with the flame of her anger. “It’s been a month, Micah. I thought we agreed it was a mistake.”
“It was a mistake.” He lifted his shoulder in a shrug. “We were drunk. You were drunk. The perfect shifter who always follows the rules. What would my brother say about you drinking yourself into oblivion after his wedding and ending up in my bed?”
She lifted her chin, and a hint of the wolf appeared in her honey-gold eyes. “I don’t have to explain my actions to him.”
“Damned right you don’t.” He strode forward and grasped her haughty chin in his hand. “But you owe me an explanation. Why did you fuck me that night?”
Her gaze slipped away from his. “We were drunk. You said it yourself.”
“Bullshit.” He waited for her to drag her attention back to his face. “The truth, Celeste.”
Even angry, her beauty took his breath away—her oval face one of pure perfection, with tawny skin and a glorious mass of blonde curls. The locks of her unpinned hair reached beyond her waist and caressed the rounded slope of her ass.
She took a deep breath and her chest rose. “The alcohol loosened my inhibitions. I was horny. You were there. So I had sex with you. End of story.”
Jesus. Just the memory of her body moving beneath his, her lips gasping his name, sent a jolt of lust through his hardened frame. “You’re lying.”
He stepped closer, trapping her between the table and his hips, and enclosed her body between his arms. “You come here dressed in this getup, expecting me to believe that’s the end of the story?”
He ran his eyes over her low-cut corset and tight black pants. Red fuck-me heels and matching lipstick should make her look cheap, but it was impossible for Celeste Proctor to look anything but classy.
He’d known her his entire life. She was his brother’s beta, a shifter he’d been forced to consider as his future sister-in-law. But that had been before Emma turned Drake’s life upside down and took the man Celeste had always thought she’d marry.
He growled out a warning, “The truth, Celeste. Now.”
She licked her too-bright lips. “I made a mistake.”
“Damn straight,” he shot back. Only it hadn’t been a mistake. No sane man would ever consider her a mistake. Sexy, successful, and so damned stubborn she made his teeth ache. “You couldn’t text me an apology?”
She tossed her hair over one shoulder and glared at him. Despite her beauty, she was fierce in her annoyance, a warrior who fought for what she wanted. “Poor Micah, always so willing to play the victim.”
Her taunt made him see crimson. He jerked a handful of her lace corset and thrust his face next to hers. “You played the victim card better than I ever could. Poor Celeste. Losing the man you love to a non-shifter. It stings, doesn’t it? Knowing you weren’t good enough for him?”
The expensive foundation and powder she wore were no match for the flush of shame tinting her cheeks. “Fuck you, Micah Randolph.”
He grinned, but it lacked humor. “Been there, done that.”
She lifted her hand, but he caught her wrist before she landed the stinging slap on his cheek. As a warning, he tightened his grip just enough to feel the bones in her wrist. “Careful. You might hurt yourself.”
She tugged at her arm and cursed when she was unable to break free of his grasp. “You made your point. Let me go.”
God, it hurt to look at her and know he could never be good enough, too much of a fuckup to have perfection. He let go of her wrist and shoved away from her. “Time for you to leave.”
She stayed where she was, her legs spread as if Micah still stood between her thighs. The provocative position reminded him of tangled sheets and sex so hot it burned in his soul.
“Micah.” Her tone dropped an octave and turned seductive. “I need your help.”
Damn it all. Even her voice made him think of tangled sheets and sweaty limbs. “Find someone else.”
She stood. The six-inch stiletto heels she wore put them on eye level despite him being several inches over six feet. “You don’t even know what I’m asking.”
“I don’t need to.” He pulled off his sweaty T-shirt and dug in his duffel bag for a clean one. “I’m not your man.”
Her gaze dropped to his chest. He would have to be blind to miss the spark of interest there, and he’d never missed any of Celeste’s expressions. She’d haunted his dreams since puberty. Too many nights he’d spent jacking off to the picture of her as a cheerleader in their high school yearbook. Too many afternoons seeing her flirt with his brother and knowing she’d never be his.
Celeste never backed down from a fight. She ignored his disinterest and forged ahead. “With Drake out of the picture, I’ve had to reevaluate my position within the Society.”
Micah shoved his arms through the sleeves of a faded black T-shirt and jerked it on. He pulled the hem down and waited for her to say more.
For the first time, she showed hesitation. Unable, or unwilling, to meet his eyes, she looked anywhere but at him. “I’m the last of my family. The pressure has been on me for years to marry well. I thought I’d found the perfect match with Drake, but I can’t ignore it anymore. I need to find a mate.”
The words ripped into him, flaying him with dreams of what could never be. He stuffed the old shirt into his bag and slipped the strap over one shoulder. “Congratulations to you and the lucky bastard, whoever he may be.”
She jerked her chin in his direction. Heat singed him from the flames in her expression. “Don’t be an ass. I need your help.”
He lifted an eyebrow. “If you think for one second, I’m going to play matchmaker for you, you’re…”
“I want you to be my mate.”
Her words forced him to a complete halt. “Come again?”

Rosanna Leo Brings her Gemini Island Shifters!

Due to technical difficulties, I had to revamp an old blog of mine. Reading through some of my old posts, I realize my life hasn't slowed down one bit! But to christen the new (old) blog, I invited Rosanna Leo over to share her latest Gemini Island Shifter. This series is one big ball of hotness, that keeps growing hotter with each new addition. Welcome, Rosanna, and I'm glad you could join me today! Can't wait to learn more about your jaguar shifter!

“You have freckles.”
Thanks so much, Robin, for hosting me today! I’m thrilled to bring you my latest paranormal romance Predator’s Fire, Gemini Island Shifters 5.
When I read a romance, I’m often entranced by how love can bloom among ordinary gestures and day-to-day life. Let’s face it, for most of us, not every moment is filled with swashbuckling adventure. I think it’s important to capture this in a novel as well. After all, sometimes it’s the little things that help us fall in love.
Sometimes it’s a simple touch, a guiding hand on the back or a palm pressed to a cheek. Sometimes it’s a few words, uttered quietly but with meaning, that lets us know the hero is completely over the moon for the heroine. Yes, passion can express itself with grand gestures as well, but I love exploring the emotions behind some of those quieter moments.
At one point in Predator’s Fire, hero Killian and heroine Nina are sitting around a campfire among others. He glances over at her and remarks out of nowhere, “You have freckles.” For Nina, this three-word sentence lets her know he’s been watching her, noticing her attributes, maybe even seeing the things others have failed to see. It’s not just a comment about her skin, it illustrates how much he’d like to get closer to her skin. It shows us his curiosity, his focus and his interest in her. No swashbuckling here, but I love the intimacy of the moment.
What little gestures have captured your heart?
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy Predator’s Fire!
BLURB AND EXCERPT FOR PREDATOR’S FIRE

Blurb:

When Nina Suzuki discovers the body of her best friend Janine, her world turns upside down. Things go from bad to worse when Janine’s corpse seems to transform into that of a large, brown wolf. The same letter warns of a sinister group called the Alpha Brethren, and urges her to find Killian Moon of the Ursa Fishing Lodge and Resort on Gemini Island.
Killian Moon is a jaguar shifter and teen mentor at the Ursa Lodge in Northern Ontario. He may be a comfort and inspiration to confused teen shifters, but he also has a fiery past. His past comes back to haunt him when human Nina arrives at the resort, demanding to speak with him. Demanding answers. Can he trust her with knowledge that will not only change her life, but possibly endanger those around him?

Excerpt:

“How much longer do I have to wait? I want to see Killian Moon. Now.”
The feminine voice, strangely soft despite its insistence, echoed deep in his being, awakening his jaguar. The great cat roared to life, turned toward the office and inhaled deeply. Its eyes flashed in interest.
In...recognition?
Killian breathed in at the same time, catching the scent of cherry blossoms through the door. The sweet perfume, mixed with human outrage, proved a heady distraction, making him forget why he was there. Shaking his head, he tried to dismiss the odd sensation as Ryland opened the door.
The door swung open and the first person he glimpsed was one of the clerks from reception, trying his hardest to placate the unexpected guest. “I’m sure Mr. Snow and Mr. Moon will be right back.”
And then his gaze landed on the petite human. Tapered Asian eyes, so dark and mysterious, but rimmed with circles of exhaustion. Smooth, cinnamon skin hinted at a mixed background. Wearing no makeup, she appeared younger than she must be, but her presence and keen eyes pegged her at around thirty years old. She had a riot of curly, black hair and feminine curves that ought to come with a warning. He could see it now. Beware: this woman’s body will cause insanity in men. Even as she gesticulated at the clerk, her boobs jiggled in such a way his throat went dry.
He pictured her in a corset, her breasts spilling over delicate lace edging, and almost forgot his name.
This Nina Suzuki was damn hot and his jaguar seemed to agree. The animal licked its lips, its golden gaze assessing and appreciating every detail, from her rounded hips to her come-hither rack.
Yes, the creature uttered on a frenzied breath.
