Excerpt from "Uncaged" by Christy Gissendaner - Available in the Paranormally Yours boxed set

The water was cold, but not nearly enough to chase away desire’s burn. The erection Gabe had sported since Rain’s appearance remained stubbornly in place. He waded waist deep into the water, and sank until his shoulders disappeared beneath the surface.

The night was calm, with stray clouds and faint moonlight. He didn’t need light to see in the darkness. The inky water soothed his tired muscles. Swimming after a fight had become tradition, a way to unwind after the vicious attack on his body and mind. The aches and pain slid away, replaced by the calm of the night. Though his muscles felt better, his mind was still twisted by gut-wrenching longing.

What twist of fate had sent Rain here? Surely she had somewhere else to go, despite her pleas to the contrary. A faint hope that she felt something for him buoyed his spirits. She must’ve discovered that he had one bed, but he’d be damned before he slept on the couch in his own home.

Normally, he swam for hours after a fight, but tonight something much better waited for him. He strode out of the pond, stopping only to swipe his clothes from the ground, and continued to his cabin. The scent of her, like damp grass after a thunderstorm, permeated his home. He stood in the doorway, dripping water on the wood plank flooring, and sucked in the smell of her.

She wasn’t in the living room. Hope filled him, because there was only one place she could be. He headed down the hall toward his bedroom, not inclined to mask his footsteps. She had to know he’d come for her. He toed the door open.

Surprise brought him to a stop. He’d expected several scenarios, but none included finding her curled up in his bed with the covers pulled around her shoulders. The steady rise and fall of her chest indicated she was asleep.

He stood over her and looked his fill. He pulled the blankets away from her upper body, marveling that she was such a heavy sleeper, and gazed at the red silk and velvet concoction she wore. It was transparent in some spots, hinting at the curve of a breast and shadowing the glimpse of a nipple. His gaze dropped lower, over the curve of her hip, and down her gently rounded thighs.

A goddess, pure perfection, and all his. Temporarily at least. He didn’t fool himself into thinking it could be more. Even if they wound up having sex, it would be a no-strings affair guaranteed to please them both. Short-lived maybe, but hopefully combustive while it lasted.
